I’M STANDING, transfixed, watching a digital display count down from 399c. Paul Jessop, who owns the pottery at Barrington Court in South Somerset, has just told me how long his kiln will take to get down to a safe temperature. I give up the idea that I’ll see his newest work while I’m here - I don’t have two days to spare.

The shop at the front is set up as a viewing area so visitors can look over to watch him work. Doesn’t that put him off?
