March is a month full of hope and expectation. The evenings are really drawing out now, the spring bulbs are here, and the fresh green foliage of perennial plants is nudging back through the soil. But there is one shrub that is already delighting us right now, with masses of gorgeous colour that lasts for weeks. Camellias are a stalwart of the British garden, loved by many, although as they prefer an acid soil, not everyone can enjoy them growing in the open ground. But do not let this deter you; many camellias can be grown very successfully in pots, using ericaceous compost and feed to provide the acidity the plant needs.
