iOS15: 51 New Features Every iPhone User Would Love To Explore
Apps Unveiled|June 2021
A new update is here to enhance your iPhone experience. iOS 15, which will be available later this year as a free software update for iPhone 6s and later, makes FaceTime calls more natural, introduces SharePlay for shared experiences, helps users focus and be in the moment with new ways to manage notifications, and brings more intelligence to photos and search to quickly access information. Apple Maps unveils beautiful new ways to explore the world, Weather is redesigned with full-screen maps and more graphical displays of data, Wallet adds support for home keys and ID cards, and browsing the internet with Safari is even simpler with a new tab bar design and Tab Groups. iOS 15 also includes new privacy controls in Siri, Mail, and more places across the system to further protect user information.

1 Spatial Audio

With spatial audio, individual voices in a FaceTime call sound as if they are coming from the direction in which each person is positioned on your screen, helping conversations flow more naturally.

2 New Mic modes

In iOS 15, the new ‘Voice isolation’ microphone mode spotlights your voice by using machine learning to identify ambient noises and block them out. So a leaf blower outside or a dog barking in the next room won’t interrupt your FaceTime call. And when the music or sounds around you are as important as what you have to say, you can choose the ‘Wide Spectrum’ microphone mode, which leaves the ambient sound unfiltered. It’s ideal for when you’re taking music lessons or want your friend to hear everything that’s happening in the space you’re in.

3 Portrait mode

The stunning Portrait mode from the “Camera” app is now optimized for video calls in FaceTime, meaning this new video effect in iOS 15 puts the focus on you, not what’s behind you by blurring the background when you are on a FaceTime video call.

4 Invite Android/ Windows users to FaceTime Calls via a unique web link

With iOS 15, FaceTime calls can be extended beyond Apple devices with the ability to create a link from iPhone, iPad, or Mac, and share it through Messages, Calendar, Mail, or third-party apps, so anyone can join a FaceTime call from their web browser on Android and Windows devices.3 Moreover, FaceTime calls on the web remain end-to-end encrypted, ensuring your call is as private and secure as any other FaceTime call.

5 Grid View

While using Group FaceTime in iOS 15, a new Grid View shows people in the same-size tiles, so you can have better conversations with a large group. The speaker is automatically highlighted so you always know who’s talking. Well, you’ll see up to six faces in the grid at a time.

6 Introducing SharePlay

SharePlay is an entirely new way to have experiences with family and friends, no matter the distance. This means, with SharePlay in iOS 15, you can now share experiences with friends on FaceTime, including listening to songs together with Apple Music, watching a TV show or movie in sync, or sharing your screen to view apps together.

SharePlay works across iPhone, iPad, and Mac, and with shared playback controls, anyone in a SharePlay session can play, pause, or jump ahead. SharePlay even extends to Apple TV, so you can watch shows or movies on a big screen while connecting over a FaceTime call, and SharePlay will keep everyone’s playback in sync. Moreover, the volume automatically adjusts, so you can keep talking while you watch.

As shared by Apple, Disney+, ESPN+, HBO Max, Hulu, MasterClass, Paramount+, Pluto TV, TikTok, Twitch, and many others have already started integrating SharePlay into their apps — to offer entirely new ways to connect.

7 Tools to help Find Focus

iOS 15 brings you powerful tools designed to help you focus and reduce distraction. “Focus” is a new feature that filters notifications and apps based on what you want to focus on at any given moment. This means, you can set your iPhone to help you be in the moment either by creating a custom Focus or selecting a suggested Focus. iOS 15 uses on-device intelligence to suggest which people and apps are allowed to notify you — when you decide to set your device to Focus, be it for finishing a presentation, enjoying an uninterrupted gaming session or a distraction-free dinner with friends.

There is even an option to create Home Screen pages with apps and widgets that apply to moments of focus (e.g., work, personal time, sleep, fitness, gaming, reading, or driving) to only display relevant apps and reduce temptation. And when Focus is set on one Apple device, it automatically applies to your other Apple devices. Moreover, when Focus mode is blocking incoming notifications, your status is automatically displayed to others in “Messages,” reflecting that you’re currently unreachable. However, you can choose to turn on a standard auto-reply for your contacts when they message you while your device is set to Focus.

8 New Notifications Experience

Notifications have been redesigned, adding contact photos for people and larger icons for apps that make them even easier to identify. And to help reduce distraction, a new ‘notification summary’ collects non-time-critical notifications for delivery at a more opportune time, such as in the morning and evening, or based on a schedule you set. However, ‘Time Sensitive’ notifications from apps will always be delivered immediately, so you won’t miss out on timely alerts like a fraud alert, car waiting outside, or reminder to go pick up your kids.

Furthermore, notifications are arranged by priority using on-device intelligence, with the most relevant notifications rising to the top, and based on your interaction with apps. Most importantly, it’s now easy to temporarily mute any app or messaging thread for the next hour or for the day.

9 Live Text

Live Text, in iOS 15, uses on-device intelligence to recognize text in a photo, so you can use functions like copy and paste, lookup, and translate.4 It works in Photos, Screenshot, Quick Look, and Safari and in live previews with Camera. For example, you can search for and locate the picture of a handwritten family recipe in Photos, or use the Camera app to quickly recognize and copy text in the moment, such as the Wi-Fi password displayed at a local coffee shop.

For now, Live Text understands seven different languages: English, Chinese, French, Italian, German, Portuguese, and Spanish. And with a system-wide translation, you can simply tap and translate.

10 Visual Look Up

With Visual Look Up in iOS 15, you can learn more about popular art and landmarks around the world, plants and flowers found in nature, breeds of pets, and even find books — by simply swiping up or tapping the information button on any photo to highlight recognized objects and scenes.

11 New Keys and State IDs come to Apple Wallet

With iOS 15 update, Apple Wallet will be getting support for additional types of keys, making it possible to access everyday places with just a tap. As shared by Apple, “Last summer, Apple introduced digital car keys, and BMW was the first car company to add its keys, allowing users to tap to unlock. This year, digital car keys get even better with support for Ultra Wideband technology, so users can securely unlock and start their supported vehicle without removing their iPhone from a pocket or bag.5 iPhone can also be used to unlock a user’s home, office, or even a hotel room — all through keys stored in Wallet.6”

Apple further shared that, “Later this year, customers in participating states in the US will be able to add their driver’s license or state IDs to Wallet. The Transportation Security Administration is working to enable airport security checkpoints as the first place customers can use their digital Identity Card in Wallet. Identity Cards in Wallet are encrypted and safely stored in the Secure Element, the same hardware technology that makes Apple Pay private and secure.”
