Breaking down language barriers to unleash the benefits of the Internet for all Indians

1. EASILY TOGGLING BETWEEN ENGLISH AND INDIAN LANGUAGE RESULTS

Four years ago, Google Search made it easier for Hindi-speaking users to flip between English and Hindi results for a search query, by introducing a simple ‘chip’ (or say ‘tab’) that they could tap to see search results in Hindi. In fact, since the launch of Hindi chip and other language features, Google had witnessed more than a 10X increase in Hindi queries in India.

Well, the recent update is that Google Search now allows you to toggle your Search results between English and four more Indian languages: Tamil, Telugu, Bangla, and Marathi.

2. UNDERSTANDING WHICH LANGUAGE CONTENT TO SURFACE, AND WHEN

Typing in an Indian language in its native script is typically more difficult, and can often take three times as long, compared to English. As a result, many people search in English even if hey really would prefer to see results in a local language they understand.

Over the next month, Google Search will start to show relevant content in supported Indian languages where appropriate, even if the local language query is typed in English. This functionality will also better serve bilingual people who are comfortable reading both English and an Indian language. According to Google, this feature will roll out in five Indian languages: Hindi, Bangla, Marathi, Tamil, and Telugu.

3. ENABLING PEOPLE TO USE APPS IN THE LANGUAGE OF THEIR CHOICE

IN SEASON Chickpeas (GARBANZO BEANS)

Chickpeas appear in early recordings in Turkey well over 5000 years ago. India produces the most chickpeas worldwide but they are grown in more than 50 countries. An excellent source of carbohydrates, protein, fiber, B vitamins, and some minerals, they are a nutritious staple of many diets. The name chickpea comes from the Latin word cancer, referring to the plant family of legumes, Fabaceae. It is also known by its popular Spanish-derived name, the garbanzo bean. Kidney beans, black beans, lima beans, and peanuts are other familiar foods found in this legume family.
