Dick Bruna created Miffy, a small female rabbit, to tell stories to his one year old son Sierk. He made Miffy a female rabbit because he wanted to draw a dress and not trousers on his rabbit. Bruna used easy black graphic lines, simple shapes and primary colours to draw Miffy. The stories are simple with four lines of narrative and an illustration in each page. Bruna made sure that children read his books all by themselves, without help from adults.
