Between them, Brisbane-based sisters Cate and Bronte Campbell boast six gold, one silver and four bronze Olympic medals. While having one person in the family with so much athletic ability is pretty rare, two is miraculous. Today, Cate, 29, and Bronte, 27, don’t think they would’ve reached such dizzying heights of success without each other.

“I think we both believe that we wouldn’t be the athletes we are today without the other one,” Bronte tells WHO. “At times in my life, I’ve been the second-fastest swimmer in the world, but also just the second-fastest in my family. While there were times that were really hard, if I didn’t have Cate to push myself against and guide me, I don’t even know if I’d have been in the pool at all!”

Did you feel like you were missing your support system by not having family at the delayed 2020 Olympics?

BRONTE Family is such a big part of helping you get there, but we were all just so grateful to finally make it to Tokyo. The Olympics felt like just what the world needed after what we’ve been through in the past 18 months [with the pandemic].
