IT was just what the doctor ordered. Ellen Pompeo had been acting professionally for 10 years in 2005 when she was cast as the likeable but complicated Meredith Grey on the instant hit, Grey’s Anatomy. And the then-36-year-old couldn’t have been happier. “During the early days, we all really had something,” Ellen recently recalled of herself and former co-stars Katherine Heigl, Sandra Oh and Patrick Dempsey. “We had a lot of fun back then.”

More than 15 years later, Ellen cares less about the fun, and is more interested in starting a new chapter in her life. Now 51 and the highest-paid woman on television, she’s decided that the upcoming 18th season of Grey’s may well be her last, as she bids farewell to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital — and to the Hollywood scene in general.
