Sumita Chakraborty

Telugu film Krack starring Ravi Teja and Shruti Haasan is the first film to hit the theatres in 2021 after the horrific lockdown. Not only that, but the film is also a huge blockbuster. Though now it’s released on AHA platform, director Gopichand Malineni was absolutely sure that he wanted to release the film only in theatres first. Here, he talks about working on Krack, Ravi Teja and Shruti Hassan and his plans of making Krack in Hindi and his dream team.

Gopichandji, 2020 has not been a happening year for many people but for you, 2021 has started extremely well. Your film Krack is a huge hit. How do you feel at this moment?

I am very happy - Krack is India’s first blockbuster to be released in theatres in 2021. It’s received a phenomenal response. In fact, as we speak more and more people are going to the theatre day by day and making it a bigger blockbuster. I’m really very happy for that. I was a bit worried before the release whether people would come to the theatres because of the pandemic and the eight months lockdown, but we were totally shocked that so many people turned up at the theatre - that too even when it was a little bit delayed for release. But people were waiting for it and it is an unanimous blockbuster. We are very happy that it’s still houseful and going strong.

When you were directing Krack, Gopichandji, did you even think it would be so big or be a blockbuster?

Yes! Right from the scripting stage itself I started feeling that it would do well. But I didn’t imagine it would be this big. It has become the biggest blockbuster.

Gopichand ji, why did you not choose the OTT to release it at first, why the theatre more so after the pandemic everybody has been wary about releasing their films at theatres? Everybody, even the big Hindi film directors, are releasing their films on the OTT. What made you make it a theatrical release?
