1950s: Audrey Hepburn & Gayatri Devi
The iconic decade was marked with the exaggerated hourglass silhouette, pops of colour and print and playful retro-chic looks with outfits like poodle skirts, dresses with cinched waists, gingham prints, and polka dots. Leading the pack was Audrey Hepburn, whose outfits, both on and offscreen, are embedded in fashion history. She breathed new life into what became wardrobe essentials at the time—hairbands, waist belts, scarves, the black polo neck and gingham trousers and, of course, the iconic oversized white shirt and black dress from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. At home, we had Maharani Gayatri Devi of Jaipur setting fashion goals. Her style extended beyond her dreamy chiffon sarees that every woman of her time wanted. She looked regal even when not decked up with jewels like the royalty she was. Even in heavier sarees, she would maintain the perfect balance with delicate accessories and just the right touch of glamour.
1960s: Jackie Kennedy & Sharmila Tagore
