He is one of India’s most popular authors, loved by children and adults alike. Ruskin Bond left an indelible mark in the world of books since his debut novel Untouchable, a collection of short stories he authored at the age of 16. Since then, Ruskin has endeared himself to millions worldwide with his vivid tales, even as he battled personal challenges. He has authored more than 500 short stories, essays and novels—over 50 of them for children— including the widely popular Funny Side Up, The Blue Umbrella and A Flight of Pigeons. He published his autobiography, Scenes from a Writer’s Life, in 1997 and its sequel, Lone Fox Dancing, in 2017. The author, who lives a quiet life in the mountains of North India, takes time out to chat with HELLO!
You recently turned 87. What are you most grateful for?
I received a lot of birthday wishes from people on social media. Unluclass, where I am one of the mentors, released Rusty’s Birthday Adventure, an audio-visual story about my most loved character Rusty, as a gift. It was such a beautiful gesture. They got all my students to share their lovely messages with me for my birthday.
