David Housego is a busy man on the day we go to visit him at home. He’s locked himself up in a room away from all the frenetic activity that keeps the rest of the household busy. When he emerges, he has the victorious smile of a man who has accomplished his task for the day. His daughter’s homework is done! David and Mandeep’s eight-year-old daughter Meher is off to spend time with her cousins and the parents make sure the academic burden is alleviated before she leaves.

Life, as it were at the Housegos, revolves around their child. Their elegant home, with its trademark Shades of India stamp, could just have been a showcase for their aesthetic sensibilities; perhaps even an extension of the textile, fabric, apparel and home décor store they’ve been running successfully for over two decades. Their success as designers and promoters of Indian craft and artisans has been celebrated in more ways than one – from winning awards at international platforms like the Maison et Objet in Paris or dressing up the President’s house on Raisina Hill, their creative oeuvre has taken them to places, quite literally.
