Your Rights When Living With Bae
Bona|March 2020
The idea that only married couples live together is an outdated one. Today, unmarried couples choose to move in with each other, whether marriage is on the cards or not. But, what happens when things don’t work out the way you expected?

The question of why couples move in together has many answers. According to clinical psychologist, Dr Matthews Katjene, these include spending time together, getting to know each other better, convenience and sharing living expenses. “Sometimes it’s a test of compatibility. Testing what it would look like or sound like in terms of communication, commitment and adjustment,” he explains. 30-year-old Amanda Ndlangisa moved in with her partner two months into their relationship. “We were inseparable; I was either at his place or he was at mine. It also made financial sense at the time. He wanted to study and I wanted to buy a car, so cutting off one person’s rent seemed like the best idea.” 32-year-old Nomandla Bobo shares that it just seemed logical for her and her then partner to live together because they were always together. “It was a passionate and spur-of-the-moment decision.” Mpho Mda* (30) says the distance was her biggest motivator. “We got tired of being in a long-distance relationship, so I moved in with him.”
