Ever watched a movie or read a book where the characters were being so sexually explicit that you found yourself sweating with envy? And, mostly because that had been lacking in your life, or maybe you and your partner had somehow fallen into a sexual rut? Each couple’s rut is unique to them. But in a nutshell, this is when sex is no longer at the same frequency as it was at the beginning of a relationship or when it has become boring or monotonous. Getting stuck in the same place in your sex life is common in both heterosexual and homosexual relationships. It is also common in both new and old unions. Clinical psychologist Dr Matthews Katjene says sexual boredom doesn’t depend on how long you’ve been together. He adds that many factors contribute to it, including relationship challenges, sickness, rigidity, power struggles, unmet sexual needs, loss of interest in partner or sex, a low libido and lack of communication, among others. But, if your sex life is no longer as exciting as it was during the honeymoon phase, it may be time to try something new, exciting and engaging. This means a shake- up in the bedroom is needed. But, in order for that to happen, one partner has to initiate the conversation and articulate their erotic desires.
