Bontle Motaung, a 25-year- old project manager from Johannesburg, was diagnosed with anaemia at 17. “I was constantly exhausted, and had recurrent headaches and dizziness. I would fall asleep in class and often feel sluggish during my menstrual period. I even tried sleeping earlier in the evening, but that didn’t help. I decided to go to the doctor, where I found out that I was anaemic,” she says. Anaemia is a condition where your blood is not able to carry enough oxygen to meet the needs of your body. This is because the number of red blood cells is low. Blood consists of two parts – a liquid called the plasma and cellular. One of the most important and numerous cell types are the red blood cells. Their purpose is to deliver oxygen from the lungs to other parts of the body. If you have too few or abnormal blood cells, the cells in your body will not get enough oxygen.
