Zoomcar, India's first personal mobility platform Subscription-Based Car Rentals Service Set to Grow in India
SME World|November 2020
As the world begins to come to terms with the wide-ranging implications of the coronavirus pandemic, major players in the car rental industry are learning to adapt to new market conditions. With social distancing becoming the norm, there is going to be a change in lifestyle and the way people commute. With companies realigning their strategies to introduce contactless customer interaction, we are also noticing a transition in the commuting and buying experience of customers.
In today's times, people are not looking Ito spend money on buying cars nor are they looking at the shared mobility option thereby increasing the potential for subscription models. Subscription minimizes financial commitment from a customer affording him the opportunity to drive a vehicle of his choice especially at the time when there is already an expected shift away from public transportation towards personal mobility.

Zoomcar is one such player which, over the past seven years, has continued to rent out cars on an hourly basis bringing about several changes. Today, one can have a car delivered to his/her location as Zoomcar runs on a different model, and the focus is on customers who want the freedom of having a car any time they require, for a longer duration.

SME WORLD in an email interaction with Greg Moran, CEO, and Co-Founder, Zoomcar :

Explain the basic concept behind launching the Zoomcar?

I have always been passionate about sustainability and a shared model for sustainable economic development. While working in the clean technology and infrastructure disciplines for an investment bank, I witnessed first-hand the opportunities that existed in working for environmentally sustainable solutions in India. Further exploration revealed the challenges in urban transportation, namely lack of infrastructure that can cushion the hike in personal vehicles. Realizing the toll it was taking on India's environment and a complete lack of a self-drive model – and not just chauffeur-driven car rentals or cab aggregators - led me to spearhead the launch of Zoomcar. I have always been fascinated with India as a market. As a fast-growing economy, it provides entrepreneurs with amazing opportunities to not only scale up their ventures but also deliver a social impact through unique, and oftentimes tech-enabled, service offerings. The opportunities in India, I realized, would only be compounded over the years, and thus, it became imperative for me to be part of India's growth story by introducing sustainable self-drive models that cater to the challenges in mobility at large. The business model of Zoomcar not only revolves around sustainability but also caters to the market need for convenient self-drive mobility. There is always a risk whenever a new category is launched. However, at Zoomcar, we believe that we have succeeded in carving a niche for this disruptive offering. We now see several startups and cab aggregators follow our lead and venture into self-drive mobility, which only comes as a validation for what we had set out to achieve.

Zoomcar operates a short-term rental and a long-term subscription model. The former operates on an hourly and daily basis with prices starting at Rs 50/hr and ranging up to Rs 250/hr depending on the vehicle type. A long-term subscription starts at Rs 15K per month and runs up to Rs 45K depending on the vehicle type.

Car rental service is popular in most of the western countries; how do you ensure the security aspect in a country like India and the prospects in the longer run?

Zoomcar has always been at the cutting-edge of tech-enabled mobility solutions. Artificial intelligence and IoT are the two pillars on which our experience works and Covid-19 has brought their importance into even sharper focus. As an example, app-enabled Keyless Entry technology minimizes human contact which is critical in these times of viral spread. Our entire tech stack and operations have already evolved to ensure that every car is thoroughly sanitized before and after each drive. We use AI for vehicle monitoring and predictive maintenance, for e.g. our models can detect patterns in Engine temperatures and coolant levels to predict engine seizures before they happen and guide customers safely to a stop before an emergency situation occurs. We also have models that predict the optimum replacement times for batteries and clutch thus minimizing breakdowns. Last year, we captured almost a 100 billion vehicle-related data points like speed, distance, RPM, clutch, brake-times. Our unique Driver Score technology encourages customers to drive cautiously and will have far-reaching consequences on the safety and longevity of our cars. The Zoomcar app, of course, allows customers to reach out at any time in case of a query through emails, messages, and chatbots. In short, by using technology Zoomcar is prioritizing safety, hygiene and customer experience, thus making its cars future-ready and COVID-19 safe.

What are the criteria for renting out car?

Zoomcar operates a short-term rental and a long-term subscription model. The former operates on an hourly and daily basis with prices starting at Rs 50/hr and ranging up to Rs 250/hr depending on the vehicle type. Long-term subscription starts at Rs 15K per month and runs up to Rs 45K depending on the vehicle type.
