The Electronic National Agriculture Market or eNAM, a key initiative of the Modi government to improve farm incomes, has surpassed its target by bringing 250 wholesale markets on to the platform. BK Jha reports

eNAM Making A Difference To The Lives Of Farmers

eNAM has certainly become a ‘big game changer’ for agriculture and it is nearing towards set target smartly as States are also delivering. Success of the project heavily depends on the fact that there is no major conflict between states and the central government. eNAM allows farmers to sell their produce to highest bidders on an online platform which should not be mistaken as a parallel marketing structure.

eNAM platform is now connected to 250 markets across 10 States. As of now Andhra Pradesh (12), Chhattisgarh (05), Gujarat (40), Haryana (36), Himachal Pradesh (07), Jharkhand (08), Madhya Pradesh (20), Rajasthan (11), Telangana (44), Uttar Pradesh (67) are leading the pack.

Reports from the markets reveal that farmers are being benefited. The basic purpose of eNAM is to ensure transparency in buying and selling of agricommodities. Challenges are many. Most importantly the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) remains a state subject. It was widely feared by commodity and agriculture experts that conflicts are bound to happen. According to them, the government should have centralised APMCs and put a cabinet rank minister to cater to commerce part of agriculture. However, it is promising to note that several states have amended their APMC Acts and readily came on board. So, as anticipated, eNAM becomes an answer to price volatility farmers often face and it is leveraging the physical infrastructure of mandis through an online trading portal, enabling buyers situated even outside the state to participate in trading at the local level.

According to Rameshwar Bhagat, a commodity trader at Delhi’s Azadpur mandi, “ Farmers are being benefited by this online platform. It is a win-win situation for both farmers and traders as we are operating on a transparent system.”
