The 36-year-old actor says she realized the many similarities different species share with mankind&mdash;how costly it is for both predators and prey to stay alive and how an animal&rsquo;s biggest enemy is often its own kind: &ldquo;Survival is a cycle that is brutal and beautiful at the same time.&rdquo; Nyong&rsquo;o was proud of her participation for another reason, too: &ldquo;I&rsquo;ve never heard this style of documentary narrated by an African. Every episode opens with the line, &lsquo;Many tales have been told of Africa, but this is our story,&rsquo; and I really felt that.&rdquo;What did you find most shocking about the Serengeti?How similar all the species are to us. This documentary does a little bit too good of a job of following both prey and predator, and you invest in both sides; you end up very emotionally invested in their survival. You want both sides to win.How did this style of project compare to being on screen?This is the first time that I am playing &ldquo;the voice of God.&rdquo; It is so much about dramatic tension because you&rsquo;re following characters&rsquo; wants, fears, desires and hopes and you&rsquo;re rooting for them. I had to really relate and see things from their perspective, but also remain somewhat neutral.How do you feel being one of few women to narrate a nature documentary?I&rsquo;m really proud of that, but when I accepted the role, all I could think about was, &ldquo;I get to be David Attenborough!&rdquo; Being an African and having so many nature documentaries based in our continent voiced by people that are not from there, I definitely recognized this would be a first&mdash;at least for me.Do you see more of these style projects in your future?I would love that. I&rsquo;m so fascinated by this work. There is no script. You can&rsquo;t prepare. It really feels like the animals told their own story, and they put it together.
