Family & Work : The Right Combo
MARWAR India|September - October 2016

While Marwari men are known for their business acumen, Marwari women have been known to be homemakers. But with changing times, the role of Marwari women is rapidly changing, with many young ladies taking to entrepreneurship or taking over existing family businesses, alongside their fathers and brothers. And working mothers! How does the community view this shift? MARWAR finds out from members of the community.

Family & Work : The Right Combo

With changing times, the community is also changing and ushering in the trend of Marwari women taking up entrepreneurial roles. My family believes in equality and so we have many working women. Education of girls and boys is given equal prominence and considered the most important aspect.

My parents wanted us to be independent and do something productive. Personally, I have tried to follow in the footsteps of my father, brother and husband all my life. It is not just because they are men, but because of their strong business acumen and ethics. There are lots of expectations from a woman. An independent, married woman will still have to balance her family, work and child with élan. Hence, we don’t get any leisure time or time to relax. But at the end of the day, I feel satisfied to see that I am doing justice to my work and my family life. It is only with my family’s support and affections that I have been able to accomplish success in such a short time. Women can shine in any sphere if they receive support and love.

It feels great to represent a community which has such a rich history and which once had many a heroic woman ruler. It is not surprising to see women today take charge of business and compete against their male counterparts. Our society has accepted this change with open arms, which is motivating the new generation to work harder to reach greater heights. Even in rural Rajasthan, things are changing and people are taking initiatives to educate the girl child, who no longer is considered a burden.
