Founder and Chairman, Lupin Limited
Dr Desh Bandhu Gupta, the founder and chairman of Lupin Limited, is no more. After a highly fruitful life and career that saw him turn Lupin from a non-entity in 1968 to a multibillion dollar generics major, he breathed his last on the morning of June 26, 2017, in Mumbai. He was 79. He is survived by his wife Manju Gupta, daughters Anuja, Richa, Kavita and Vinita and son Nilesh.
Dr Gupta, who hailed from Rajgarh in Rajasthan, began his career as an associate professor of chemistry at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science in Pilani. In the early sixites, he moved to Bombay (now Mumbai), where he took up a job with a British pharmaceutical company called May & Baker, before turning entrpreneur in 1968, with ₹5,000 borrowed from his wife. His company, Lupin, at the time had just two employees.
