I first came across the word hubris some 50 years ago in “The Best and The Brightest” written by the late Pulitzerwinner David Halberstam, in which he examined the origins of the Vietnam War and the U.S. government political and military machinations that were the hallmarks of the conflict. The war, he concluded in his 600-page monumental work, was not so much about the U.S. fear of communism overrunning Southeast Asia; it was about the hubris American officials managing the war were suffering from.
