Soil sampling basics

A soil sample should represent a homogeneous area where there are no visible soil differences.

A soil test is undertaken to estimate the concentrations of nutrients available to the plant in order to determine fertiliser recommendations. The acidity or pH level is also tested.

Laboratory tests generally check for plant nutrients in three categories:

• Major nutrients: nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium;

• Secondary nutrients: sulphur, calcium and magnesium;
