TESLA GOT THERE first with its Model X, while Jaguar was the first traditional car maker to launch a prestige electric SUV. But the Audi E-tron is the first from one of Germany’s big three, so you might start to wonder if the smaller brands are destined to be crowded out.
Not to be confused with the plug-in hybrid ‘e-tron’ versions of the A3 and Q7, the new E-tron model is fully electric, with a motor on each axle to give it four-wheel drive and a combined output of 402bhp.
That’s enough for 0-62mph in 5.7sec, and as in all electric cars, acceleration is near instantaneous. However, both the Model X and I-Pace are faster still, plus the E-tron only gives you the full beans in S mode – and even then, only in eight-second bursts.
