THE INVITED READERS OF ULTIMATE ADVENTURE 2021
Four Wheeler|February 2022
THE READERS, YOU, ARE WHY WE DO THIS
Verne Simons
We wish we could invite all of you along on our epic Ultimate Adventure (UA), but face it, that isn’t feasible. Still, we appreciate and include Four Wheeler readers by inviting a select few each year to join us on the world’s oldest and most awesome off-road adventure trip. We select the invited readers from applications received at fourwheeler.com. For 2021, we invited four new readers and one returning reader to join us on UA, and here they are.

THE ICE CREAM VAN RISES TO THE TOP

Travis Farmer and his co-driver Cole Conner were a great choice for returning reader for 2021. While all the readers from UA2020 were awesome and a pleasure to have on the trip, it’s always a pleasure to watch Travis stuff 7,000 pounds of van down a Jeep-sized trail. His driving is amazing and may make anyone think they, too, could make a van work on UA. We’re skeptical of that. Cole Conner has been in the industry for a while and is always ready to spot, run winchline, lend a hand with a repair, and more. That makes for a hard team to beat on UA. These guys fit the event like a van-shaped peg in a van-shaped hole. Also, they brought ice cream for everyone.

THE MINIVAN THAT GOES AND GOES AND GOES

Partway through the second or third day of UA2021 we got in front of Josh Cooper and his well-built Nissan Pathfinder. We were excited to see how the rig would do. We’ve oft thought that this was a great platform ... except for the IFS and IRS that these rigs come with from the factory. We didn’t know that they came with a 5.6L V-8 for a few years. We were surprised to see how well the Wrangler JL-axled Nissan did on the trail. After all, we were in a ringer, the UA Long Range Jeep, but every time we did an obstacle and expected the Nissan to struggle, it was right there behind us ready to hit the next one. Josh and co-driver Jeremy Davis were a ton of fun to hang out with, too. They both know how to tell a yarn and are willing to lend a hand at any moment. Also, when Josh smashed out a few of the Pathfinder’s windows on some tight trees they quickly cleaned things up and continued with a smile. “It’ll buff out!”

Favorite part of the trip: “Honestly, it’s hard to name one particular thing as it was all amazing and ranks right up there as one of my best weeks ever! If I had to pick one thing, then it would have to be the camaraderie between all the people there. It was an amazing group of people, and we spent a week hanging out wheeling some epic trails.”

The story of the invisible car and the silver Durango

My wife called it “the invisible car.” We bought it in 2002 after the third or fourth unsuccessful attempt at getting Ford to honor warranty work on her ’00 Focus ZTS. We finally gave up and traded it in on a super-low-mileage ’99 Toyota Camry.
