Long-lost Scout photos
Four Wheeler|February 2021
During some overdue office rearranging, I recently unearthed a long-lost photo album that I had forgotten about.
KEN BRUBAKER

The contents of the album included a collection of International Scout photos I took over 30 years ago.

The year was 1989, and I was an Illinois farm-dwelling Scout and general 4x4 junkie. To my surprise, the 4-Wheel & Off-Road Jamboree Spring Nationals came to the Winnebago County Fairgrounds in Pecatonica, Illinois, which was only seven miles from my house. To say I was stoked was an understatement. I was there in my ’77 Scout every day of the three-day show, Canon AE-1 blazing, burning through rolls of film, swapping those rolls of film out of the camera every 36 exposures.

FULLSIZE BRONCO SAS

I’ve been looking into solid axle swapping my fullsize ’92 Bronco for a while now. The TTB frontend is wearing out my tires in weird pattens and they aren’t lasting very long.

How do you trailside camp?

Fact: For most of us, camping and wheeling go together. It’s a safe bet that where there’s folks gathered to wheel for more than a day there’s probably camping involved.

If your garage could talk, what story could it tell?

I found a photo of my garage from several years ago and posted it on my @christianhazelofficial Instagram page with the question, “If your garage could talk, would it have much to say?” For gearheads, the garage is hands down the most important room in the house and the activity center for waking hours.

Come Together

SOMETIMES IT’S EASY to get bogged down in negativity, especially coming out of 2020. We’re going through a pandemic, many of us haven’t seen our families in almost a year, and all the fun activities we used to do (horse related or not) have been rescheduled, canceled, or set aside for the time being.

A FOAMIE FIXATION

To say that Bill Yirka of Enid, Oklahoma likes foam-board RC airplanes would be an understatement, as evidenced by this photo of Bill surrounded by 274 of his own designs. Bill tells us he started flying about six years ago, noting, “Unaware of the local club, I learned on my own, which resulted in a depleted checking account and a lot of crumpled parts that once resembled store-bought wings, tails, and fuselages.”

The Calling

I sat in my car, overlooking a shimmering intercoastal waterway, the night sky studded with stars. Everything around me had a vibrant, otherworldly glow. This is West Palm Beach, I realized. My family and I used to live here. But we’d moved away about a year ago….
