La vie en Roma

We spend a day in the sweltering heat of Dubai to drive an equally hot car – the achingly beautiful new Ferrari Roma
Dhruv Saxena

There are cars, then there are the special ones, and right at the top of that pile are those that wear one of the most recognisable, one of the most iconic badges of all time. Special doesn’t even begin to describe the place of the Prancing Horse in the automotive world quite honestly. For decades, Ferrari has dominated the automotive landscape, both on the road and on the track, churning out some of the most, if not the most desirable cars year after year. Cars that don’t just set your pulses racing with their performance, but ones that tug at your heartstrings and invoke emotions in ways most can’t. Amongst the latest to join that illustrious list is the Ferrari Roma – a front-engined grand tourer that is also the stepping stone into the world of the Prancing Horse.

The only trouble with the Roma's design is that pictures just can’t do justice to the way this Ferrari looks in the flesh. I too was on the fence about its styling the first time I saw pictures of the Roma, but seeing it in the flesh made me fall in love. Even a Portofino owner couldn’t help gawking at the Roma as it pulled up to the front porch of our hotel expressing his admiration for just how beautifully the Roma has been styled. Right from the moment you start walking towards it to when you get closer and notice those curves, the flowing lines, the proportions, the stance, everything makes it so hard to look away. There are no unnecessary cuts and creases, no unwarranted air vents, just smooth flowing lines coupled with alluring details like those Ferrari Monza-esque headlamps with a light strip running through them as well as the tail lamps that flow with the rear lip. The Ferrari Roma is undeniably gorgeous and I know appearance is subjective, but I doubt you’d find many, if any, who aren’t smitten by its looks. It’s the sort of car you want to be seen in and speaking of which, the interior is just as adept at arresting your gaze as the exterior.
