1 DAY Don’t let the cold weather stop you heading out to shoot landscapes. In autumn you can take advantage of colourful trees, and in winter you’ve every chance of capturing a moody mist or a frosty winter wonderland. The short days and long nights make it easier to commit to sunrise or sunset shoots, too.

No matter what time of year you choose to embark on a landscape shoot, though, success is often down to good preparation. The best landscape photographers aren’t just lucky; they’re consistently able to capture stunning skies and unusual weather phenomena, because they’re some of the most organised professionals in the business.

Preparation can go beyond just getting a good photo, too. Some landscape shoots involve hiking and hill-walking, and although these are popular activities they can be hazardous if taken lightly. A first aid kit is a must, and in mountainous terrain, the weather can change in an instant and you can’t always rely on your phone, so planning is crucial.
