THE PRO: JEREMY FLINT
CAMERA: CANON 5D MARK IV
Jeremy is a pro who specialises in travel, landscape and location photography. He won the National Geographic Traveller Grand Prize in 2016, and the Association of Photographers Discovery Award in 2017. We met him in Cambridge, UK, an architecture photographer’s dream, where he took keen photographer David under his wing. You can see David’s work at

APPRENTICE: DAVID TODHUNTER
CAMERA: CANON EOS 5DS
David, from West Sussex, loves photographing buildings, and wants some tips and tricks for capturing great-looking architecture shots with his wide-angle lenses. David previously brought a tilt-shift lens, but sold it as he didn’t use it very much, and he’d particularly like advice on how to keep the straight lines of buildings straight without the help of a specialist lens.
TECHNIQUE ASSESSMENT
Jeremy offered David some pointers for capturing perfect architecture shots
APERTURE PRIORITY MODE
To start, Jeremy set David’s camera to Aperture Priority mode (Av on the mode dial), so that he could have full control over the aperture setting. For most of the cityscapes they’d be using a mid-range aperture of between f/11 and f/16 to get a large depth of field for maximum front-to-back sharpness – the camera then takes care of the shutter speed to capture a correctly exposed image.
