Ticket To Transformation

Were you always inclined to design?

NP: As the child of an occupationally nomadic father, we moved many times and ultimately settled in Indore when I was fourteen. After I completed school I received a place to study honors microbiology at the University of Indore. After a couple of months, I was unhappy with both the field of microbiology and the learning environment. I knew that I wanted to be an innovator rather than a laboratory scientist. After seeking guidance, I recognized the need to study mathematics and discovered the field of design and NID. Friends could not understand why I dropped out of the honors course, as it was not easy to get a seat. I was extremely fortunate because I had family support, and I knew I needed to make a change. Since then there has been no looking back. Design is now a passion.

Arriving at NID in Ahmedabad, I realized it was a creative and open place and I felt at home on the campus. I gave the entrance test and was very frank in the group discussion about my previous experiences. The culture seemed open, students were working hard with their hearts, and this was a different feeling from University in Indore. I was accepted in the program; the entire first year, foundation studies, was an exploration of all disciplines. I read up about the different fields of design and suspected that product design would be my interest, but I tried everything.

DEVELOPING A DISCOURSE

Documentary photographer Taha Ahmad believes his work has a greater purpose than merely being admired by a select audience for its esthetic value. It's when people are able to see the underside of society and understand the prevailing social injustice that the work tries to reveal that it is truly worthwhile.
