INDIAN CRAFTSMANSHIP LANDS ON THE AFRICAN ISLAND OF ZANZIBAR IN A COLLECTION OF GUEST HOUSES BY MUMBAI–BASED CASE DESIGN.

Designed by Case Design, Kizikula is located on the south-western coast of Zanzibar. Perched at the edge of the property, the swimming pool— made of local white coral limestone and south Indian grey granite— offers sweeping views of the ocean.

A flight of stairs leads to the shaded timber pavilion, restaurant and kitchen, which circle the swimming pool. Fresh fruits and vegetables from the garden and nursery, designed by New Zealand–based landscape architect Andy Hamilton in collaboration with permaculturists Franko Göhse and Bernadette Kirsch, feed the farm-to-table restaurant. Facing page: The material palette of Kizikula borrows entirely from the island itself. The orange-pink coral limestone was locally quarried, while the gleaming brown Mninga wood was sourced from mainland Tanzania.

A view from the sunset deck frames the shallow cliff overlooking the rolling waves beneath. At high tide, it is possible to dive directly into the water from either the deck or the cliff.
