IT ISN’T often that Britain’s rare livestock breeds make the news, but then North Ronaldsay sheep are so distinctive and unique that they deserve a bit of media fuss. If you have never seen a North Ronaldsay (or even heard of them), then let me introduce you to these remarkable little island survivors. As the name suggests, these slender, primitive-looking sheep originate from wild and windswept North Ronaldsay, the most northerly island of the Orkney archipelago. Their meat is tasty, lean and gamey with a flavour not unlike wild duck, and it’s got a brilliant reputation among some of the best gourmets in the business.
