Letters from Lockdown
Cat Talk|August 2020
Recently, the staff of Cat Talked asked our feline correspondents to let us know what kind of impact the lockdown/ quarantine was having on them and their households. Here is a sample of the responses we received.

My Humans Need Me

I don’t know why the humans are suddenly home all the time. One day they were happy and carefree and the next they were sitting on the couch all day binge-watching the noise box. I couldn’t stand to look at them just blankly staring at the screens so I changed my routine a little for them. I started sitting on the sofa next to them, or on the back near their heads, or sometimes on their laps. I would purr to let them know I was there. At first, I didn’t see any difference, but eventually they started to pet my fur and show signs of life. Sometimes they would take a nap with me, but more often they would get up and do something to make our home nicer. One thing’s certain, they talk more to me. I like that. I sure hope they can get back outside again soon, but for now I’ll just make sure they don’t get lonely.

Going to the Vet

I have to tell you, this lockdown has made going to the veterinarian scary! It was always uncomfortable because of all the strange sounds and smells there, but now I don’t even have Mom while I’m there. We go to the office as we usually do, riding in the rattle-box. But Mom doesn’t go inside with me. We sit in the car while she talks on her shiny toy. Pretty soon, someone comes out and takes me from the car in my carrier. We go into a bright but cold room. I’m there with just the tech and the doctor without Mom to tell me everything is all right. They try to make me feel good, but I am so scared! They take me out of my safe box and weigh me and stick me with a needle. As soon as I can, I scramble back into my carrier. Thankfully, nothing bad happened the first time and they brought me back to Mom. I was so happy to be back with her. I’ve had to go back a couple of times. It gets a little less scary each time, but I still wish Mom could come in with me.

Up Close and Purr-sonal

Welcome to the new Cat Talk series "Up Close and Purr-sonal." While we might know what someone breeds and shows, we often have no idea about what their life and interests are outside of the show hall. And we are surprised at what we are learning about them as well! Do you have a recommendation for someone to interview? Let us know! Email Teresa Keiger at tkeiger@cfa.org.

My Special Cat

Most of us have had that special cat—a heart cat with whom we had a deep connection. It may have been the cat we had as a child, or the one that saw us through a troubled time, or one with whom we bonded as we exhibited at cat shows. Whether the cat found us or we sought it out, those connections cannot be denied. These are the stories of some of those special cats and what they mean or meant to us.

FUR NAMES

Names. Oh, what an important choice in the life of cat! It is how a cat will be known in the show rings and in daily life. A name can alternate between words of delight or new forms of cursing (especially in this case!). Each name tells a story and this is the story of Toxicate Holy $#&@*
