Cats and Holistic Chiropractic Intervention
Candilee Jackson

We are all products of our upbringing, from our formal academic education, to the “college of hard knocks,” to the lessons learned at the feet of our parents and grandparents And of course, there’s the popular Facebook meme, “Sometimes I open my mouth and my mother comes out!” A great deal of our belief systems comes from our parents, especially medical care and advice, which then trickles down to pet medical care and advice. Based on the topic of chiropractic medicine and healing, I think you know where I am coming from … the hallowed halls of medical academia are not mixed with quackery. However, “there’s proof in the pudding.”

As we and our cats grow older, more medical interventions are needed to keep mind and body functioning and comfortable. With age come conditions, diseases and syndromes which complicate one another, and sometimes, a singular medical approach is not necessarily the best answer. This is the point at which holistic healing can be considered, and starts to demonstrate its value.

Holistic Healing

While healing the body is the main objective, the holistic approach looks at the patient as a whole rather than the sum of its parts. It seeks to create an intervention to remedy not just one specific disease but other related health issues as well. “In treating an animal, a holistic veterinarian will determine the best combination of both conventional and alternative (or complementary) therapies for a given individual. This mixture of healing arts and skills is as natural as life itself. Therein lies the very essence of the word holistic.” (AHVMA) It means taking in the whole picture of the patient—the environment, the disease pattern, the relationship of pet with owner—and developing a treatment protocol using a wide range of therapies for healing the patient. The holistic practitioner is interested not only in a medical history, but also genetics, nutrition, environment, family relationships, stress levels, and other factors.

Chiropractic: A Partner to Holistic Healing

Chiropractic refers to the practice of manipulating the spine to treat disease.” (Marsden et al) The term chiropractic “comes from the Greek words cheir which means “hand” and praxis which means “practice” or “done by.” Chiropractors base their theories of disease on the connections between various body structures and the nervous system via the spinal column, and on the role of the spine in biomechanics and movement. Therapy is directed at the spine in order to modify the progression of disease.” (Marsden et al)

Up Close and Purr-sonal

Welcome to the new Cat Talk series "Up Close and Purr-sonal." While we might know what someone breeds and shows, we often have no idea about what their life and interests are outside of the show hall. And we are surprised at what we are learning about them as well! Do you have a recommendation for someone to interview? Let us know! Email Teresa Keiger at tkeiger@cfa.org.

My Special Cat

Most of us have had that special cat—a heart cat with whom we had a deep connection. It may have been the cat we had as a child, or the one that saw us through a troubled time, or one with whom we bonded as we exhibited at cat shows. Whether the cat found us or we sought it out, those connections cannot be denied. These are the stories of some of those special cats and what they mean or meant to us.

FUR NAMES

Names. Oh, what an important choice in the life of cat! It is how a cat will be known in the show rings and in daily life. A name can alternate between words of delight or new forms of cursing (especially in this case!). Each name tells a story and this is the story of Toxicate Holy $#&@*
