The most important time in a puppy’s development is during the first year, especially during the first four months of life. This doesn’t mean your four-legged friend won’t be able to learn new things as a juvenile, adolescent, or adult. It does, however, mean the way he learns and responds are formed very early and most certainly in your puppy’s first 100 days. We understand their adorable faces get them off the hook for many naughty behaviors such as chewing things up and biting with those extra sharp puppy teeth! But no matter how cute they are, though, training a puppy is very important. Now, how many times have you seen new pet owners buying or adopting a new family member, and never dedicating time to train the pupper, thinking that the dog will learn things on his own? Likewise, other dog owners will opt for training a pooch in their own way, using the “whatever works” method of dog training. Though we always recommend a professional trainer for your dog, the sad truth is we have an acute scarcity of them. So if you’re training your dog on your own, it is imperative that you understand some training basics in order to choose the most appropriate and effective training method for your dog. For starters, the “whatever works” approach does not work for a puppy.
