What do all of these photos have in common?

It’s how these pets have been incorporated into human life.

Here’s the thing: Not all pets can be incorporated easily into human life; domesticating a gecko, for example, is more challenging, and as for fish, there are physical limitations. But we owe domesticated animals a spot in our lives—and hearts.

After all, we taught them to want to be part of a human family. We made them dependent on us. That’s why it’s also the height of cruelty to abandon pets, to let them have a taste of life with us then to leave them out in the cold.
