HEADLINE NEWS
Perhaps the most outlandish record of the review period was that of a Long toed Lapwing that turned up at Rietvlei Wetland Reserve near Milnerton, outside Cape Town. While the species is known to occur in the north and east of the subregion, this bird was probably some 2000 kilometres out of range and caused quite a stir among local birders. It remains a very rare bird in South Africa, with fewer than 20 confirmed records, the lion’s share of which come from the very northern reaches of Zululand. This latest record is probably only the fourth record in the country away from that area.
