AI isn't just for manipulating and editing your images. Richard Sibley explains how AI can provide vital tools for every photographer, regardless of interests or ability

Beyond editing: AI for photographers

Think of AI, and most photographers will probably immediately think of the power of Al image editing or manipulation. By now, most of us are familiar with the latest generation of tools from companies such as Adobe, Topaz, Apple, or Samsung for intelligently removing objects from images or placing a new object in the scene. However, Al has much more to offer photographers than just image editing.

This feature aims to show what is currently possible with tools such as ChatGPT or Claude.ai, but for those unfamiliar, here is a brief primer on precisely what Al tools such as these are.

Large Language Models

First of all, what people call Al isn't artificial intelligence as such, not in the way science fiction writers have imagined. The latest tools, such as ChatGPT and Claude, are Large Language Models, or LLMs. They have been fed information in the form of books, articles, manuals, and websites and through algorithmic language training by the creators, they can predict patterns of language and data. When you ask Al a question, it creates its reply based on what it thinks the next word should be, referencing the words that have come before. As a result of being able to construct language in such a way and having access to vast amounts of information knowledge it has been trained on, it gives the impression that it is intelligent.

Some Al also has access to the internet to analyse current information; we will see More of this in the future. I'm writing this article two months before it will be published, and with AI evolving rapidly, some of the things mentioned could already be at a more advanced stage.
