IN a dramatic turn of events on Wednesday morning, a post-mortem conducted on the carcass of the mother elephant that died at Marudhamalai foothills near Coimbatore on Tuesday revealed that the animal was pregnant. A team of veterinarians found a 12-to 16-month-old male foetus inside the elephant's womb, besides a few single-use plastic bags and aluminium foil in its intestines, during the autopsy.

The mother elephant, which had been under treatment for the last four days, and her calf had caught everyone's eye when a heartbreaking photograph and video of the little giant trying to wake up her mother broke the internet.
