US envoy seems to reverse Iran nuclear policy

The Guardian

|

April 16, 2025

Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff has said Iran must totally eliminate its nuclear programme, seemingly reversing a policy he had articulated hours earlier that would have let Iran continue to enrich uranium at a low level for civilian use.

- Patrick Wintour

The switch of policy is set to make it harder for the US to reach an agreement with Tehran, bringing back into play the threat of an attack on Iran's nuclear sites.

It was also agreed that the next round of indirect US-Iran talks, due to start on Saturday, would continue to be in Oman and not change to Italy, as had been proposed by the US.
