New audio tours to tell 'amazing stories' of female artists
The Guardian
|March 01, 2024
Five leading museums, including Tate Britain and the Met in New York, are introducing audio guides dedicated to underserved female artists in their collections, to mark Women's History Month.
Museums Without Men, devised by the Guardian art critic Katy Hessel, will showcase dozens of female and gender non-conforming artists who at present are often in the shadow of their male contemporaries.
"I've always gone to museums and hunted out female artists," said Hessel, who wrote the book The Story of Art Without Men. She said she was shocked at how few works by women were on the walls.
While in museums she would notice that the female artists whose work was on display always had labels next to their work which mentioned male artists they had worked with or were inspired by, to "contextualise them".
