Rohingya Muslim Corridor in Bangladesh: Yunus Govt's Bold Move
The Daily Guardian
|May 28, 2025
The Rohingya are a stateless Muslim minority from Myanmar, facing decades of persecution. Over 900,000 fled to Bangladesh after a brutal military crackdown in 2017, prompting international genocide investigations and ongoing humanitarian concerns.
In 2025, Bangladesh finds itself at the epicenter of a bold diplomatic and humanitarian initiative that could redefine regional geopolitics. The country's interim government, led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has launched a controversial yet ambitious plan to create a humanitarian corridor to facilitate the voluntary return of over a million Rohingya Muslims to Myanmar. With strong support from the United States and several other Western allies, this proposal—unofficially termed the "Rohingya Muslim Corridor"—has stirred both hope and anxiety across South Asia.
Prolonged Humanitarian Crisis The Rohingya crisis began in 2017, when Myanmar's military launched a brutal crackdown in Rakhine State, forcing over 1 million Rohingya Muslims to flee to neighboring Bangladesh. Most settled in sprawling refugee camps in Cox's Bazar, making it the world's largest refugee settlement. Despite multiple repatriation attempts and international diplomatic efforts, the situation has remained largely stagnant due to continued insecurity in Myanmar, lack of legal recognition for the Rohingya, and resistance from Myanmar's military junta. Bangladesh has hosted these refugees for nearly eight years, incurring enormous humanitarian, social, and economic costs. Now, with a transitional government in Dhaka aiming to reposition Bangladesh on the global stage, a new approach has emerged—creating a safe, internationally-monitored corridor that would enable the refugees' return.
