Dirco urges talks over Syria strife

The department of international relations and cooperation (Dirco) has called for dialogue over the change of government in Syria, warning that tension could escalate and lead to a situation similar to that seen in Libya after the civil war in 2011.

Following the overthrow of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, the country descended into chaos, marked by political fragmentation, violence and competing factions vying for control.

This instability left Libya vulnerable to external interference, with lasting consequences for its governance and security.

Speaking on Radio 702 yesterday, Dirco's director-general Zane Dangor expressed concern about the parallels between the situations in Libya and Syria.

"We hope that this does not create another Libya or Afghanistan," Dangor said.
