Now in its 21st year, the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Football Championship continues to stand tall as one of South Africa's most influential youth football platforms.

Over the years, the tournament has unearthed and nurtured stars who have gone on to represent both their clubs and the national team, including the likes of Sipho Mbule, Teboho Mokoena, and Ronwen Williams. The 2025 edition came to a thrilling close at Giant Stadium in Soshanguve, where St Marks International School from Mpumalanga claimed the U19 boys' title with a 1-0 win over Gauteng's Fumana Secondary School, walking away with a whopping R3 million in infrastructure funding. With over 12 000 schools taking part across the country, the competition remains a cornerstone of school football development - promoting opportunity, discipline, and community upliftment. Soccer Laduma's Masebe Qina sat down with Peter Ledwaba, Head of Sports at the Motsepe Foundation, to reflect on this year's event, its growth, challenges, and the life-changing impact the tournament continues to have on young players and their communities.
