Rare crossing of viaduct enjoyed by 2,000 with historic celebrations

THOUSANDS of visitors were given a rare chance to walk across one of North Devon’s most iconic landmarks as the Chelfham Viaduct opened to the public for only the second time in its 130-year history.

More than 2,000 people took the opportunity to explore the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway viaduct over a weekend of celebrations, which also included the official opening of the new Chelfham Valley Heritage Hub. The event was part of Railway 200, a nationwide initiative marking 200 years since the advent of the modern railway.

The Chelfham Valley Heritage Hub has been created by The Growforward Project on the site of the former Chelfham Mill School. It will feature a residential wellbeing retreat centre, café and bistro, heritage visitor centre, and accommodation for staff and volunteers.

The opening ceremony was held on Saturday, with Cllr Janet Coates, mayor of Barnstaple, formally launching the new hub. Attendees were treated to live music, food and drink, and tours of the restored Chelfham Station, along with the highlight — the rare chance to walk the viaduct and take in its scenic views.
