Are donations to German Red Cross taxed?
Mint Hyderabad
|November 11, 2025
I lived in Germany for about 20 years before moving to India during the pandemic. I wish to donate ₹5 lakh to the German Red Cross before Christmas. Will this cause any tax issues in India? -Name withheld on request
A donation to the German Red Cross does not attract tax in India for donors. But, it does not qualify for a tax deduction since the German Red Cross is based overseas and not registered in India for charitable purposes. In Indian tax law, a deeming provision treats any payment by resident to a nonresident without consideration as income deemed to arise in India to the nonresident. It excludes payments to charities registered in India under the Income Tax Act, 1961.
