HC permits relocating of 26 trees for SC expansion

The Delhi high court has allowed the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) to transplant 26 trees obstructing a project to expand the Supreme Court complex, while stressing that environmental safeguards must be ensured.
NEW DELHI:
The expansion project, to be carried out in two phases, is aimed at creating additional courtrooms—including a dedicated constitutional court—chambers for judges, and improved facilities for lawyers and litigants.
The first phase, which aims to expand and reorganise significantly enlarged operations of the court complex, involves demolition of the existing Annexe and museum buildings.
In the second phase, the east and west wings connected to the semicircular main building will be demolished to make way for larger courtrooms, litigant-friendly amenities, and ample basement parking.
