TROOPS LEAVE FORT IKAPA AMID HOUSING CONDITIONS DISPUTE

- GENEVIEVE SERRA

It's all about the base

THE South African National Defence Union (Sandu) has defended its Operation Prosper soldiers’ claims of inhumane conditions at Fort iKapa after they were transferred to Air Force Base Ysterplaat.

Last week, Phiroane Phala, Co-Chairperson of the Joint Standing Committee on Defence, together with two members of the committee, visited Fort iKapa Military Base in Acacia Park, Cape Town, and said they found living conditions at the base to be adequate.

Leaking

This after Sandu demanded urgent action from the Department of Defence (DOD) reported unsafe conditions, including a leaking hangar with no warm water for showers and just three toilets for the troops.
