Woman set fire to flat after police arrived to evict her

Marina Gale Wildish has been sentenced to three years in prison after a jury at Truro Crown Court had earlier convicted her of one count of arson being reckless as to whether life was endangered.

A sentencing hearing last Wednesday was told Wildish, 44, claimed at her trial that the fire, on November 29 last year, began by accident after she left a lit cigarette poised over a sink filled with rubbish.

However, the jury did not believe her and found her guilty of starting the fire on purpose when police officers arrived at the multiple-occupancy building, belonging to social housing provider LiveWest.

At the time 40 people were living in the building in College Green, St Austell, and all had to be evacuated.

Some were unable to return to their homes for a number of days as a result of Wildish’s action.
