Basil Rajapaksa is the strategist and considered to be the mover and shaker of the present regime. Rajapaksa who has been in active politics for two decades contested the general elections in 1977 for Mulkirigala for the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP). He later became the General Secretary of the breakaway faction led by SLFP's then Deputy Leader, Maithreepala Senanayake (Maithree faction).
