The Goa State Museum will be permanently shifted to proposed premises at Ella, with the government clearing construction of the museum building to be located on the land of the department of agriculture.
Coming out with this information, the director of the Goa State Museum, Radha Bhave said that for long the museum has been functioning from the ground floor of the Adil Shah palace, and due to the paucity of space in this palace only few artifacts as well as other display items have been exhibited for the visitors.
“The government has already taken a decision to shift the museum to this new location, as it cannot continue to operate from the Adil Shah Palace,” she added.
Incidentally, the number of visitors to the museum has drastically come down during past sixteen months, due to the ongoing Corona pandemic.
Meanwhile, the cabinet meeting on June 9 approved the transfer of the Ella land admeasuring 9,520 sq mts, which is in possession of the department of agriculture to the department of museum. This has been done for the purpose of construction of the new for museum building, with a condition that the department of museum should allow the department of Agriculture to use the existing mango trees and banana plants on the particular land, for propagation purpose and harvesting of produce.
It may be recalled that the Goa State museum originally located in its premises at Patto, was temporarily moved to the Adil Shah Palace in 2017, as the museum building had been crumbling due to water seepage and roof leaks, every monsoon season. The building was hardly two decades old.
The Goa State Museum has 10,000 plus artifacts.
Sources informed that the construction of a new museum building at Ella could take two to three years.
