The constituency of Cuncolim got its COVID care centre officially inaugurated on Thursday at the hands of local MLA Clafacio Dias. While calling on people to make use of the centre, the MLA has also appealed to the government to enable vaccination of seafarers who are set to join their jobs.

Speaking at the inauguration of the centre, Dias thanked all those that had made the centre possible while also appealing to people to use the facility. “This COVID care centre is for the people and we hope that the pandemic comes to an end very soon. Thanks to the Chief Minister, councillors, PHC Balli incharge and Fr George. There are many people in Balli and Cuncolim who cannot self isolate at their homes and may end up spreading the virus to everyone in the home. I hope this centre will be helpful to people,” he said.

He further added, “We have appealed to the Chief Minister to allow seafarers to get vaccinated so they can join their jobs soon. We were happy that the announcement that they would be given the second shot was made but it has still not started because of issues with the online portal. The central government should make the necessary changes on the online portal so they can get their second dose within 28 days.”

Balli PHC incharge Dr Mamta Kakodkar meanwhile informed of the functioning of the centre. “Those who cannot isolate at home and who are at the risk of spreading the infection can avail of this care centre. There is a doctor and nurses here who will be on rotation and patients will be kept under isolation for 10 days. The staff here includes four doctors, five nurses plus housekeeping and security who are working on rotation basis. There are 20 beds at this facility, 10 for men and ten for women. Currently, there is a decrease in cases, there are 192 active cases in the area,” she said.
